Glossary

Affiliation Fees

  • Yearly fees that must be paid by each bowler (if the league chooses to affiliate with the 5 Pin Bowlers Association.

  • The fees will be $8.00 for the 2007-08 season.

  • These fees cover a wide range of items, including prizes, organization costs, tournament costs, etc.

Average

  • A bowlers total pins (or points) for the season divided by the total number of games they have played.

Constitution

  • A document many leagues produce for their bowlers stating the requirements and expectations of the league and bowlers.  This is a binding contract that the executive committee must follow while operating the league.

  • Changes may only be made at the conclusion of a league season, when passed by a majority vote by the current league members.

Doe Score

  • When a bowler is unable to attend regular league play and does not roll-off or arrange for a substitute, their scores will be their average less 10% (90% of their average).  These scores will be used for calculating team totals and points only.  It will not affect that bowlers actual average.

  • The bowlers is still responsible for the weekly league fees.

Executive Committee

  • A group of bowlers elected to carry out league operations.  Positions usually include Secretary (in charge of statistics), President (duties vary), and Treasurer (in charge of league finances).

  • The members of the executive committee also make decisions that are not covered directly by the league constitution.

  • Other positions may exist, such as an entertainment committee.

  • Unless specifically state otherwise, any league member may run for office.  Positions are voted upon by peers at the end of each season.

50/50 Draw

  • A weekly draw available to all leagues.  For $1.00, a bowler may enter their name into the draw.  On Friday night, we select one name from the bin containing all bowlers names.  If that person has paid their $1.00 that week, they win the current money pot.  If that person has not paid, we continue to select names until we select a person who has paid.  That person wins $50.00.

  • 50 cents of every dollar paid goes into the money pot to be won.  The other 50 cents goes to covering bowler's traveling expenses, entry fees, uniform costs, etc.  100% of the money collected benefits bowlers.

Financial Statements

  • A summary of the prize money receipts and expenditures made by the league throughout the season.

  • Produced by many leagues at the conclusion of the season.

Handicap

  • The number of points that is added to a teams score (an equalizer).  This is found by adding together each team members average and subtracting that total from the scratch mark.

  • Leagues usually use a scratch mark of 1000.  Most leagues also handicap of 100%, but 80% and 90% are not unusual.

  • For example, if the sum of a teams averages is 700 and the scratch mark is 1000, the difference is 300.  A 100% handicap system would result in 300 points being added each game, while a 80% handicap system would results in 240 points being added.

  • Don't worry, the computers and secretaries take care of this.

Jackpot/Super Jackpot

  • Random images that may appear on the screen before you bowl.

  • If you bowl a strike on a Super Jackpot, you win a Free Large Pizza from the Gallery Restaurant.  Otherwise, you win a free game pass and an entry to win one month of free league bowling.

No Tap

  • A game format where a bowler only needs to knock down 4 out of the 5 pins on the first ball to get a strike.  Eastview Bowl runs a No Tap league each spring (May - June) using this format.  Lots of fun and lots of prize money.

Pins Over Average

  • A tournament format where the winner is determined by which bowler has exceeded their individual average by the most.

  • The opposite would be scratch, where high score wins.

Roll-Off

  • In a situation where a bowler cannot attend league at the regular time, that bowler may bowl their games ahead of time.  The scores will automatically be calculated into your team totals.  This must be done before league play.  Also known as a pre-bowl.

  • You may also pay to enter the 50/50 Draw at this time.  However, it is not possible to enter the Strike It Rich pot.

Scratch

  • A tournament format where the winner is the person with the highest overall score.

Strike It Rich

  • A weekly pot that any bowlers may enter (except youth), for $1.00 each per week.  Each bowlers starts off with three dollar signs above their name on the computer screen.  In each of the three games bowled, there is two "strike frames" where a bowler must bowl a strike.  If a strike is not obtained in that frame, the bowler will lose one of their dollar signs.

  • That's three dollar signs and six chances of losing them.  You only need six strikes in one night to win hundreds of dollars.  This may seem unlikely to a lower-average bowler, but it is definitely possible.

Substitute Bowler

  • When a bowler is unable to attend regular league play, they may arrange for a substitute bowler in their place.  This bowlers only needs to meet normally league requirements to participate.

  • Fee arrangements between the regular and the sub are not dictated by Eastview Bowl.  The regular bowler is ultimately responsible for payment.

Turkey of the Month Draw

  • Whenever a bowlers bowls a "Turkey" during league play (three strikes in a row), they may enter their name into a monthly draw.  Grand Prize is oddly a turkey.

  • There is no charge to enter.
